Thursday Session

Really impressed with how eager to learn all the children are in both groups. Today we discussed strategies for solving our multiplication problems , the Year 4 group are getting close to mastering using the place value strategy while the Year 5/6 group are starting to master cross products.

Tomorrow will be challenge day, some competition to get the brain juices flowing. Who will set the record for the fastest skip counting in threes Y4s?

Happy Mr Hill

You are probably all tucked up by now but Michael a dotty array is what we used yesterday in the sets of 10, we used it to illustrate how we group double digit multiplication problems. Bianca, you should be able to click on the link on the right hand side of the blog to get into the 'multiplier' activity. I am not going to give the password over the internet as it is a secure site, check your book!
I am thrilled that you guys have used the blog! To the secret mother, maths class starts at 12pm, I'll see you there if you are game enough to be shown up by a bunch of clever 10 & 11 year olds.

Wednesday Session

Today we are going over some of our new learning from yesterday. Both groups have to show parents their learning by teaching them how to use the 'Hard Multiplication' digital learning tool, the link is listed in the 'Learning Links' to your right.

Tuesday Session

Year 4

Today we are learning to use place value to solve multiplication problems. For example 6 x 14 = 6 x 10 (60) + 6 x 4 (24) = 84. Today I will introduce the concept with equipment and the follow-up task involves students drawing this equipment.
Get learning those times tables Year 4's!

Year 5/6

Today we are learning to multiply 2 digit numbers with 2 digit numbers in our heads. I call this strategy 'cross-products'. Check out the student's books, it is too hard to show you the strategy here. I will introduce it today using arrays.
Remember to spend some time on the deci-master!

Monday Session

Today is about setting our goals and establishing my expectations. Below I have the goals for both groups so check them out. This is a great place to ask questions if you have any.

Year 4 Learning Goals

1. To be able to solve multiplication problems by using strategies such as partitioning, tidy numbers and proportional adjustment.
2. To have quick recall of all multiplication basic facts (1 x 1, 10 x 10).
3.To be able to solve division problems by using standard place value.

Year 5/6 Learning Goals

1. To be able to solve multiplication problems involving 2 double digit numbers mentally.
2. To be able to solve multiplication problems involving decimal numbers by using strategies such as partitioning, tidy numbers and proportional adjustment.
3. To be able to use a range of strategies to solve division problems mentally.

Be sure to check out the learning links.
