Thursday/Friday Session-Week 9

Both Groups

We are trying to complete our assessment tasks to see whether our learning goals have been achieved. I am really impressed with how well the children have been able to quickly apply the strategies they have learnt.

These assessments will come home in the students learning journals.

Monday Session, Week 9

Year 4/5 & 6

This week we are doing some revision of strategies already learnt.

Make sure you all go back and try out some of the digital activities as a way of revising what you have learnt.

Wednesday Session, Week 8

Year 4

We looked at solving division problems by changing them to multiplication problems. For example 42 divided by 7 is the same as 7 x ? = 42.

Year 5/6

We explored more division strategies and had a go at playing 'Divided Loyalties'. The children have got a good grasp on the place value strategy but need to continue to explore and apply some of the other strategies.

I am away tomorrow so the children have plenty of follow up work to do in class.

Year 5/6 Problem-Tuesday

Year 5/6

Bob had earned $3.78 for 9 aluminium cans that he recycled off the school field. How much does he earn for each can that he finds?

Post the answer as a comment and show your thinking.

Tuesday Session Week 8

Year 4

Same again today. A bit more work with equipment to help the children image what is happening.

Year 5/6

Going to focus on the place value strategy today. Use the divider tool on the right, this is great for illustrating what we are trying to do.

Monday, Week 8

Year 4

Introducing proportional adjustment, specifically doubling and halving. An example is 4 x 10 is the same as 2 x 20 or 8 x 5. We looked at representing this with blocks to illustrate that we are using the same numbers in a different way.

Year 5/6

Today we explored 2 strategies that can be explored to solve problems involving division. The first one, proportional adjustment involves simplifying the problem. For example, 320 divided by 5 can be done by going 320 divided by 10 and then doubling the answer. The second method involves using place value. For example 336 divided by 6 can be solved by going 6 x 50 = 300 + 6 x 6 = 36. Quick recall of multiplication facts is essential here!

Friday, Week 7

Year 4

More of the same today. We will do some speed testing of our 4, 6, 7, and 8 times tables too.

Year 5/6

Working with decimals again. We are learning to use the strategies we already have and apply them to problems involving multiplication of decimals.

Students have to give the 'Canteen Activity' a go in the Learning Links on your right.

Monday, June 8, 2009

Tuesday Session, Week 7

Year 4

Some more learning today on using the compensation strategy. The children are picking it up really fast. Keep working on those times tables too!

Year 5/6

Today we starting solving multiplication problems involving decimals. Get your child to show you how they solve a problem involving decimals. Today they have to solve the following problem and write their thinking and solution as a comment.

Problem

Jimmy is a freestyle skier. He did 6 jumps and scored 9.6 for every jump. What was his total score after the 6 jumps?

Sunday, June 7, 2009

Monday, Week 7 Session

Year 4

We are learning to use the compensation strategy to multiply large numbers. For instance to do 4 x 58 the students will do 4 x 60 then minus 4 x 2 to solve. I will model this using blocks and money.

Don't forget to practice your 6x and 7x!

Year 5/6

As for Friday as the group didn't show.

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Friday, Week 6

Year 4

Focus on reviewing our previous learning-using Place value to solve multiplication problems. We are also going to work on strategies to solve our 6, 7 and 9 times tables. The children then need to practice these over the next week.

The strategy we will learn involves splitting the tables. For example the 7 times table is just just your 5x plus your 2x. 7 x 7 = 5 x 7 (35) + 2 x 7 (14). By having these strategies the learning of facts by rote becomes much easier.

Year 5/6

We will review cross products and spend the rest of the session on number knowledge, relating to decimals and equivalent fractions. This knowledge is essential before getting into solving problems that involve multiplying and dividing decimals.

Have a go at the digistore activity, 'Deci-Master'. The link is on the right.

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Thursday Session

Really impressed with how eager to learn all the children are in both groups. Today we discussed strategies for solving our multiplication problems , the Year 4 group are getting close to mastering using the place value strategy while the Year 5/6 group are starting to master cross products.

Tomorrow will be challenge day, some competition to get the brain juices flowing. Who will set the record for the fastest skip counting in threes Y4s?

Happy Mr Hill

You are probably all tucked up by now but Michael a dotty array is what we used yesterday in the sets of 10, we used it to illustrate how we group double digit multiplication problems. Bianca, you should be able to click on the link on the right hand side of the blog to get into the 'multiplier' activity. I am not going to give the password over the internet as it is a secure site, check your book!
I am thrilled that you guys have used the blog! To the secret mother, maths class starts at 12pm, I'll see you there if you are game enough to be shown up by a bunch of clever 10 & 11 year olds.

Wednesday Session

Today we are going over some of our new learning from yesterday. Both groups have to show parents their learning by teaching them how to use the 'Hard Multiplication' digital learning tool, the link is listed in the 'Learning Links' to your right.

Monday, May 25, 2009

Tuesday Session

Year 4

Today we are learning to use place value to solve multiplication problems. For example 6 x 14 = 6 x 10 (60) + 6 x 4 (24) = 84. Today I will introduce the concept with equipment and the follow-up task involves students drawing this equipment.
Get learning those times tables Year 4's!

Year 5/6

Today we are learning to multiply 2 digit numbers with 2 digit numbers in our heads. I call this strategy 'cross-products'. Check out the student's books, it is too hard to show you the strategy here. I will introduce it today using arrays.
Remember to spend some time on the deci-master!

Monday Session

Today is about setting our goals and establishing my expectations. Below I have the goals for both groups so check them out. This is a great place to ask questions if you have any.

Year 4 Learning Goals

1. To be able to solve multiplication problems by using strategies such as partitioning, tidy numbers and proportional adjustment.
2. To have quick recall of all multiplication basic facts (1 x 1, 10 x 10).
3.To be able to solve division problems by using standard place value.

Year 5/6 Learning Goals

1. To be able to solve multiplication problems involving 2 double digit numbers mentally.
2. To be able to solve multiplication problems involving decimal numbers by using strategies such as partitioning, tidy numbers and proportional adjustment.
3. To be able to use a range of strategies to solve division problems mentally.

Be sure to check out the learning links.
