Monday, Week 8

Year 4

Introducing proportional adjustment, specifically doubling and halving. An example is 4 x 10 is the same as 2 x 20 or 8 x 5. We looked at representing this with blocks to illustrate that we are using the same numbers in a different way.

Year 5/6

Today we explored 2 strategies that can be explored to solve problems involving division. The first one, proportional adjustment involves simplifying the problem. For example, 320 divided by 5 can be done by going 320 divided by 10 and then doubling the answer. The second method involves using place value. For example 336 divided by 6 can be solved by going 6 x 50 = 300 + 6 x 6 = 36. Quick recall of multiplication facts is essential here!
